Are you in or are you out?

Office cliques.... ever heard of those?

Thought you might have.... unpopular and personal opinion... I HATE them!

As you may have guessed it, it hasn’t worked out well for me, this office clique situation, but it isn’t really an easy situation for any new kid, no matter what the industry. However add in a sales team.... throw in a newbie sales member and then it’s just carnage! (Well it can be, competitive industry, you want to learn as much as you can, and they’re looking at you like you’re about to steal every lead and sale off them).

I spent months trying to fit in, and it was a massive struggle for every job I’ve had previously. People aren’t so quick to welcome you in when HR and the boss has walked away, and the part that baffles me the most is that every person has been the new kid at some point in their lives.... so why make it difficult for those who join their business?

Now this seems so menial in comparison to all the other struggles there are to be had in an office, but it does have quite a large effect on a person's mental health and work performance. It’s so daunting starting a new job anywhere, especially when you’ve been used to a particular dynamic in life, in some (as I like to call them) playground bullies, and all of a sudden your excitement is short lived and you wake up every morning dreading your day at work.

That dread and worry that you feel in the morning is what sets your mood, attitude and performance for that day. You spend so much of the day focused on everything aside from your role...... some disagree, but ask yourself.....would your role be easier if you’d made some friends to begin with?.... yes, I thought so.

Making friends at work isn’t everything, granted, however it does really help to motivate you and lift your mood, ready for the day. One of those people may be someone you really bond with whom you can lean on at any time, even if you feel you cannot speak to the manager.

Can you see where I’m going with this?

It all has a knock on effect on how you are in work and how you perform in work and also general life.

It’s not all down to office friends, I am aware of that, however it does play a big part making someone comfortable and happy in work. This then translates into performance.

The easier it is to be at work, the better your performance and more focused you will be.
